Congo Sets Military Tribunals

BRAZZAVILLE, Congo (PANA) - Authorities in Congo have set up two military tribunals in Brazzaville and Point-Noire to try soldiers accused of committing atrocities, the minister of information, Francois Ibovi, said Thursday, following a council of ministers meeting chaired by President Denis Sassou-Nguesso.

The government established a military justice division in 1992 to try soldiers.

The human rights observatory in the country has accused the army of engaging in atrocities, including summary executions, against civilians during the conflict between it and militiamen loyal to ousted President Pascal Lissouba and Prime Minister Bernard Kolelas.

Ibovi said most of the alleged perpetrators of those acts have never been taken to court.
