Ethiopians leave detention camps

Thousands of Ethiopians, released from detention camps in Eritrea, have been crossing into Ethiopia.

Most are women, children and the elderly, and they bring with them reports of atrocities.

They said that in one camp, Damba in southern Eritrea, people were beaten, raped and tortured, and were given little food or water.

They also said that up to ten thousand Ethiopian men still remained in the camp, and appealed for help to secure their release.

Most of the Ethiopians used to live in Eritrea but were rounded up and detained when Ethiopia launched a full-scale offensive against Eritrea in May.

They are slowly being released and repatriated after both countries agreed to end hostilities in their two-year-old war.
