The authorities in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh have ordered the deployment of additonal anti-riot police to quell communal unrest in the city of Kanpur.
At least fifteen people have died since clashes broke out on Friday between police and Muslims protesting against the alleged burning of a copy of the Koran by Hindu radicals in Delhi.
Police and protesters fought pitched battles in several places in Kanpur on Sunday and police fired in the air to disperse a Hindu mob trying to damage a mosque.
A curfew covering parts of the city has been extended to several other areas and at least one-hundred-and-fifty people have been arrested so far. The Koran is reported to have been burnt in a protest in Delhi over the destruction of Buddhist statues by the Taleban Muslim authorities in Afghanistan.
